Enclosed is a typescript copy of a letter from H A Cumberbatch, Smyrna, to the Marquess of Lansdowne, dated 17 December 1903, consisting of two pages. Cumberbatch forwards a report regarding 'seismic disturbances that have been occruing at Smyrna' and recorded by seismometric apparatus. He is indebted to Father Jung at the College for the report and three tracings 'depicting the three most severs [sic] shocks felt up to yesterday'. Remarks it was thought Smyrna was at the centrre of the disturbances but it is only the effects of earthquakes at a distance. Includes Father Jung, Professor at the French College of the Sacre Coeur's, report of 'earthquakes at Smyrna', in French, consisting of two pages. Enclosed is a memoranda to Professor [John] Milne, dated 21 January 1903, regarding letter from Foreign Office abour seismology and 'enclosing despatch from Smyrna'. [Robert William Frederick Harrison] requests Milne's opinion regarding the correspondence. Include Milne's reply dated 22 January 1903. |
