DescriptionVilliers has been instructed by the Marquess of Lansdowne to send the Royal society a copy of a despatch from His Majesty's Minister at Brussels, who sends a copy of a note from the Congo Government 'proposing the establishment of an international commission to investigate sleeping sickness [African trypanosomiasis]. Lord Lansdowne would like to know the view of the Royal Society and the usefulness of such a commission. Enclosed is a typescript letter from Constantine Phipps, Brussels, to the Marquess of Lansdowne, dated 19 May 1903 in which he communicates a copy of a note from the Congo Government enquiring whether the [British] Government would be willing to send a 'mixed commission' comprising of specialists to Central Africa in order to investigate [African trypanosomiasis]. Includes a note in French from Central Africa, dated 18 May 1903, regarding the same.
