DescriptionLargely legal documents relating to the will of Edward Walter Smithson, bequeathing stock to the Royal Society, the income of which was to be dedicated to the creation of a Fellowship for the carrying on of original scientific research with a view to the discovery of new laws or principles rather than the exploitation of what is known. The founder wished the Fund to be linked to the University of Cambridge.
