Title | Letter from Horace Lamb, The Owens College, Manchester, to Lord Rayleigh |
Date | 5 March 1894 |
Description | Lamb will not be able to attend the meeting of the Gunning Fund Committee. He wonders if the physical portion of the income might be spent on endowing a lecture or short course of lectures, to be given by a foreign savant, the Bakerian endowment being insufficient. The intervals between physical awards would be about right and the Society could expect lectures from men of the first eminence from Europe and America. He gives examples of those who might have lectured from the last twenty years. He asks if Rayleigh could put forward his suggestion. He thinks it would be a pity if the money was spent on work provided for by the Government Grant. |
