TitleLetter from William Abbott Herdman, University College, Liverpool, to Sir Michael Foster
Date27 June 1901
DescriptionHe quite agrees with Foster that Rivers is by far the best of the two [for the Gunning Fund]. He has had a letter from Lankester recommending Richard Evans, who is certainly doing good work. However, Haddon, Howes and Bateson have all written in favour of Rivers, and he will see from the enclosure that Halliburton hopes to get the Physiological Committee to concur, which should settle the matter. He does not see the need for a meeting of the committees. His last availability is this week, and he is just off on a fisheries cruise to the Outer Hebrides for two weeks - letters will be forwarded. With regard to the Mackinnon Studentship, he knows of two applicants: R. Evans and O.V. Darbishire, who are both good. He would like to know if there are more candidates and he would be glad to give his opinion to the committee. He hopes that Foster will find someone for the Antarctic - 'to go the whole way'.
