TitleHolograph manuscript by Joseph Banks on "Coins and Tokens"
Date17 November 1812
Description"The precious metals were for many centuries considered as the Faithful Representations of Property & of course as the best material for constituting a medium of Commerce in the Circulating coin of nations". This Quality depended on the extreme Stability of their value...The Turbulence of the times in which we live has intirely destroyed these properties...by making Gold a part of their assented Cargo, raised the Price of this metal in England far above its value in other Countries, while the disturbed state of South America has closed up most of the mines from whence our annual supplies of Silver were derived".
