DescriptionEnglish oak wainscot chair, panel-backed, with a shaped top-rail surmounted with two serpents and flowers, shaped arms, turned legs and moulded stretchers. The back panel has a floral motif which is repeated in the chair’s tapestry-work cushion. The top-rail is engraved with the initials ‘RS’ and the date ‘1691’. Said to have belonged to Robert Southwell FRS.

Council Minutes for 16 January 1936, minute 37, records approval for the purchase of the armchair by the Society in 1935 for 66 guineas.
