DescriptionBirt discusses the finances in regard to the continuance of the Kew Observatory. Birt informed Mr [Francis] Ronalds that he would be willing to undertake his duties on a salary of £100 per annum, with a residency, and a supply of light and fuel. It is evident that the continuance of the Kew Observatory is dependent on finance, and upon further consideration it is found that a larger sum than £150 would be required per annum, with Birt’s stipend being reduced, which Birt remarks as a ‘great sacrifice’ but on he is willing to make. Birt discusses the need to appoint an observer who would be capable of keeping observations in the absence of the principal observer, other ‘menial’ jobs, and the matter of his accommodation. Birt discusses two additional expenses, the salary of the ‘servants’ and the residence of the observer.
