| Description | Informs Sabine that the government of India has started to organise a meteorological department for the whole of India and has appointed [Henry Francis] Blanford (meteorological reporter to the Governor of Bengal) as the head of the department. Chambers refers to his brother [Charles Chambers] not being appointed as director of Indian meteorology and therefore Chambers chances of succeeding his brother at Colaba [Observatory] have ‘vanished’. However, Chambers has applied for the position of deputy to Blanford who will be responsible for meteorology of the northwest provinces and Punjab. Chambers requests Sabine for a recommendation regarding this, as well as his support in conducting a magnetic survey in India, as there will be opportunities to travel the country for meteorological inspection. |
