Title | Letter from James Ivory, 20 Southampton Street, Pentonville to [Edward Sabine] |
Date | 18 September [1826] |
Description | Ivory thanks Sabine for sending a copy of his book, however, finds it does not ‘contain much relating to the figure of the earth’ different from what was seen previously. Refers to Ivory’s three set of experiments and remarks he has been unable to fix ‘definitely’ any one formula for the pendulum. Discusses the ‘mode of calculation’ Sabine follows and the ‘ellipticity’. Refers to experiments at ‘St Thomas, Ascension, Sierra Leone and Jamaica’, the pendulum at these stations and at the equator. Discusses calculations regarding the figure of the earth. Refers to the pendulum calculations and ellipticity. |
