Title | Letter from Robert Lewis John Ellery, Sydney to Edward Sabine |
Date | March 1858 |
Description | Regarding the Hobarton Observatory, Ellery’s service there and his ‘unexpected discharge’ without any compensation. Ellery refers to Sabine’s efforts for him, recommendation of a pension for him from Sir J Beaufort to the admiralty and a letter from the Duke of Newcastle to Sir [William] Denison regarding hopes of employment for Ellery in the colony. Denison was unable to provide Ellery with suitable employment. Ellery looks to ‘favour’ from ‘his lordship’ Denison if not for another appointment, then a usual pension, as Ellery’s service extended ten years and his duties performed with ‘satisfaction’.
Ellery describes his hard work at the Horbarton Observatory. |
