Title | Letter from Robert Lewis John Ellery, Melbourne Observatory to Edward Sabine |
Date | 26 May 1866 |
Description | The sum of £360 for self-registering instruments will be sent. Ellery has received copies of Sabine’s anniversary address and has forwarded the relevant copies to their destinations and it was read with ‘interest’. Ellery intends to write to Mr [Balfour] Stewart regarding the self-registering instruments. Ellery refers to the results of terrestrial magnetism to be ‘inter comparable’. Ellery gave Mr [George Frederic] Verdon, Colonial Treasurer a letter of introduction to Sabine. Verdon is going ‘home’ [England] to discuss the question of colonial defences. Ellery notes that any success for the Melbourne Observatory and the ‘big telescope’ [the great Melbourne telescope] are ‘entirely due to his action in the government and parliament’ and comments on him being a ‘supporter of science’. |
