| Description | Update regarding the establishment of a new observatory in Mauritius. Meldrum thanks Sabine and Mrs [Elizabeth Juliana Leeves] Sabine for their kindness. Meldrum sent Sabine a report regarding ‘the laying of the foundation stone of the main building’ by HRH the Duke of Edinburgh ‘which ensures the completion of the work’. Meldrum is sorry to inform Sabine the magnetical observatory is not yet ready and updates regarding the building’s construction. Meldrum describes work he has conducted. Discussion regarding the formation of ‘the cyclones of the southern Indian Ocean’. Remarks on Sir Henry Barkly’s departure from Mauritius. Reference to the ‘calamities’ of the colony which caused delays to the observatory work. Discussion regarding the good condition of the magnetograph room. Discusses the daily observations of the sunspots. Refers to sickness on the Island, and remarks on his good health and devotion to the advancement of science. |
