DescriptionRoss annotates the title showing the Editor of the Dublin Gazette put ‘scientific’ in the title without his knowledge.

Refers to a letter by Mr Thorpe, Chemist of Murree, found in the Pioneer dated 29th September 1869, and enable Ross to provide an explanation of his ‘experiments and the manner in which the account of them appeared in the Pioneer’. Refers to Mr Thorpe’s objections to the use of ‘discoveries’ for some of his experiments. Reference to ‘ancient works’, ‘Kunkel’s vitrarian experiments’, Dr [Henry Francis] Blanford’s (Head of the Meteorology Department at Calcutta) translation of Dr Schreer’s work. Refers to the ‘chemical history of the blowpipe’. Discussion regarding chemical reagents in particular cobalt. Description of ‘pyrotechny’ and explanation to the title of the paper. Discussion regarding new inventions of the blowpipe to regulate the blast. Discusses the ‘old flames of blowpipe’. Ross describes his experiments. Refers to the ‘principles of pyro-chemistry’.

Includes an addendum dates 23rd October 1869, and refers to the different colours of the chromatic oxides, such as cobalt, chromium, and manganese.
