Title | Copy letter from C R [Charles Richard] Weld, the Assistant Secretary of the Royal Society; to C P [Charles Piazzi] Smyth Esq |
Date | 18 February 1848 |
Description | Having been forward the letter to Samuel Hunter Christie, answers Charles Piazzi Smyth's accusation that Charles Richard Weld refused a case of the Edinburgh Astronomical Observations. Explains the Royal Society have never patronised the Edinburgh Observatory and have never been asked to receive and distribute them, indeed Captain [Willaim Henry] Symth has never heard of the Edinburgh Observations being distributed from the Royal Society. Hears of them being distributed last year from Prof Forbes, but as they were in the same cover as the 'Transactions of the Royal Society of Edinburgh' it was assumed that was what was contained. The refusal of the case is justified given these circumstances; that Smyth did not give any advance warning; that its transport to the Royal Society was not paid and that the expenses of its redistribution would be too great. Informs the case will be accepted if Symth agrees to pay for these expenses. |
