Description | Botanical study of Phlox carolina, common name 'thick leaf phlox'. Described by John Martyn in the 'Historia Plantarum Rariorum' (1728-1737). Grown at Chelsea Physic Garden, the original specimens probably gathered by Mark Catesby.
Purple flowering plant, showing flowers open and in bud, with green leaves. Inscribed in ink 'Lychnidea Caroliniana foribus quasi umbellatim dispositis folio lucidis crassis acutus, Martyn. H.R.P.D.' Not signed. Watermarked 'LVG.' Stamped on the reverse with the Royal Society's stamp. |
