First described by Herman Boerhaave, Dutch botanist and physician, in his book 'Index alter plantarum quae in horto academico Lugduno-Batavo aluntur' (1720). This painting is reproduced in the Society of Gardeners' book 'Catalogus Plantarum' (1730) (plate 6, central figure).
