In addition, letters related to Captain James Clark Ross’s Antarctic expedition of 1839 and British colonial observatories established in connection with it. Preliminary negotiations with Lord Minto and the government, negotiations with the Board of Ordnance, considerations as to the instruments to be ordered, difficulties experienced with the vertical force instrument, arrangements for publishing, the Niger expedition, and numerous incidental discussions. Chief correspondents include Edward Sabine, Humphrey Lloyd, John Phillips, James Clark Ross, Robert Were Fox, Thomas Best Jervis, Samuel Hunter Christie, John Richardson.
