TitleLetter from Humphrey Lloyd, Fitzwilliam Square, Dublin to Edward Sabine
Date14 April 1848
DescriptionLloyd provides the connection for the effect of the inducing action on the deflecting magnet in his instrument. Discussion on the unconnected expansion of the force, and the connected value using Lloyd’s method. Lloyd notes the connection is always subtractive. Discussion on the connection of m for the change of temperature. Lloyd proposes a formula to combine the actual temperature at the time of deflection and the temperature corresponding to the time of determination of m.

In reply to Sabine’s letter, Lloyd finds there is no flaw in the theory of the instrument and no omissions in the details.

Discussion on the best deflection distance. Its determination will depend on the relation between the probable error of observation and the error produced by the omission of the fourth term. Lloyd recommends the best distance is between eight and nine inches for the length of magnet Sabine has. Lloyd is satisfied with the distances he originally proposed but considers alterations.
