TitleLetter from Humphrey Lloyd, Kilcooney, Bray to Edward Sabine
DateJanuary 1857
DescriptionLloyd answers Sabine’s question regarding methods of observing the force and suggests the best method for a specific latitude. Discussion on the statical method proposed by Lloyd and Mr [Robert Were] Fox, the known method of vibration, and the method of deflection whether the magnet is in the horizontal or vertical plane, if each method should be used with a unifilar magnetometer or with a dip circle. Lloyd discusses different combinations of method and instrument dependent on the desired result.

Lloyd discusses the probable error of fiction in the dip circle. Lloyd advises that the absolute or semi absolute method should be adopted. Lloyd discusses two methods that are dependent on the other apparatus used. If only the force is to be observed Lloyd suggests using the vibration box and the chronometer as opposed to the unifilar and employing a collimator magnet observed with a telescope. Achieving one absolute result.

Discussion on the Gaussian method.
