TitleLetter from John Welsh, Kew Observatory to [Edward Sabine]
Date24 March 1857
DescriptionWelsh informs Sabine that he has red Dr [Humphrey] Lloyd’s letter and memorandum regarding his plan to have a combination of two different methods for the changes of magnetic moment. Welsh discusses the method of using the deflecting magnet. Welsh notes that the magnet should be protected from the observer’s breath. Welsh suggests reducing the angle of deflection of the static needle, and that the static needle should be balanced after it is determined there has been no serios fault to the axle.

Welsh informs Sabine that Dr [William Balfour] Baikie has handed over the magnetical observations to Mr [John Hawley] Glover [reference to the Niger expedition].
