| Description | Sabine is replying to Lloyd's last letter on the instant as he is to travel to O'Brien's in county Clare in two hours time and for a few days. Sabine does not know what [Samuel Hunter] Christie has said about Meyer's needle. Describes Meyer's method for intensity measurements. Sabine returns the silk [thread, used to suspend a magnetic needle] Lloyd had sent him and asks Lloyd to try it again himself. Sabine has made two observations using it and found them discordant. Lloyd's observations can be sent back to Sabine through Mr Ainsworth. Sabine is happy to adopt Lloyd's method of observing the intensity and inclination of the earth's magnetic field with the same needle, and will do so in any portion of the country Lloyd requests. Needs to have a needle altered for the purpose.
Sabine thinks Lloyd should postpone disbursing results on diurnal fluctuation of magnetic field made on 5th and 6th November until further observations can be made. Wishes to hear Lloyd lecture on light and is endeavouring to follow [John] Herschel's treatise but finds it beyond his capability. |
