TitleLetter from Edward Sabine, Tortington, to Humphrey Lloyd, Trinity College, Dublin
Date23 October 1838
DescriptionSabine quotes at length a letter he has received that morning from John Herschel on the mood of Lord Melbourne towards the proposed south polar expedition. Herschel also asks how quickly instruments could be made ready for this expedition and for the fixed observatories.

Sabine also quotes a letter received from [Thomas] Spring Rice [Chancellor of the Exchequer] on the subject of a polar expedition. This letter assures Sabine that the matter will be discussed as soon as absent members of the government have returned.

Due to Sabine et al's political lobbying on the above matters there is no time for his and Lloyd's report on their British magnetic survey, which must be suspended for the time being.
