TitleLetter from Edward Sabine, 3 St James's Place to Humphrey Lloyd
Date2 December 1839
DescriptionSabine tells Lloyd of the Royal Society anniversary dinner and ballet, which took place on Saturday last. Much talk centred on the Ponizzi catalogue, which cost the Royal Society £2000 and has caused quite a stir. Sabine calls this episode a sign of 'gross mismanagement' within the Royal Society.

The President's speech gave only a slight notice of the system of fixed magnetic observatories recently established, and no notice of Lloyd's own role in this. Lloyd much put out by this, as was Sabine, who has made attempts to rectify this oversight.

The Board of Directors of the East India Company have given official notice that Madras [Chennai], Simla and Singapore are selected as sites for magnetic observatories under its direction.

[Charles James Buchanan] Riddell has chosen Toronto as the site for the Canadian magnetic observatory, which Sabine approves of as Montreal is a 'swamp'.
