TitleLetter from Charles James Buchanan Riddell, Woolwich to Humphrey Lloyd
Date19th century
DescriptionRiddell updates Lloyd on the new deflection inclinometer which he saw at [Henry] Barrow’s yesterday. Riddell notes Lloyd’s instructions were very clear, the angles of deflection will be small in respect to the errors of observation. Discussion on the microscopes and challenges of reading the needle accurately. Riddell discusses the angle of deflection produced by one of the deflecting needles. Riddell informs that the ships leave Woolwich on Monday. Riddell described to [Barrow] to pierce other holes nearer to the instrument to allow the deflecting needle to be placed at less distances.

Riddell asked Captain [Francis] Crozier if he has any static needle belonging to his six inch dip circle, if so Riddell suggests using a six inch deflecting needle.

Discussion on the arrangement required to fit the axle into the holes. Riddell asks Lloyd to inform him if he would like any changes made to the instrument.
