Description | A primitively painted study of a human leg severed at the thigh on a wooden dissecting or surgical bench. The knee is swollen with a cancer of the cartilage. The work is inscribed: " Fungous Exostosis of the Knee. Malignant. A copy by Mrs Rose. 2 Feet 2 Inches round the Knee. 2 - 1 - below the Knee."
The naturalist and geologist Caleb Burrell Rose practised as a surgeon in Swaffham, Norfolk, 1816-c.1859. His wife died in 1828. |
