TitleDraft for a book, 'Review of observations made with pendulums...', by John Herschel
Date1881
DescriptionIncomplete version of a book manuscript. The full working title is given as 'Review of observations made with pendulums for the determination of the force and variatuion of gravity and of discussions of the figure of the Earth founded upon them.' Herschel notes in some prefaratory remarks that 'The object of this work is to give an account of the origin, progress and present state of that branch of Geodesy which deals with the vertical attraction of the Earth. It rarely happens that a physical enquiry can be so entirely identified with one particular instrument...Although the absolute force of gravity has no doubt been sought to be detremined by other means yet none approaches in acccuracy to the pendulum...'
