Title | Letter from Antoine [Thomson] d'Abbadie, Urrugne pres Behobie to Edward Sabine |
Date | 27 July 1853 |
Description | Abbadie discusses observations he has recently made. Abbadie praises Sabine on his work regarding magnetism, and notes it is ‘as important as Bradley’s in astronomy’ and will one day be used to build a complete theory of the mysterious forces of the magnet. Abbadie asks Sabine to look at the Bulletin de la Société de Géographie for May 1853 page 324 where Abbadie’s letter has been printed. Abbadie’s work is slowly progressing, and he is currently working in a farmhouse in the Bay of Biscay. Abbadie has joined mountain Adiva to the Red Sea by azimuth and zenith distances, has competed the Galla country, and is trying to settle the line of azimuth in the eastern part of Gojjam. Abbadie intends to publish his magnetical observations as made. Discussion on joining the Saka with the Red Sea.
Abbadie congratulates Mrs [Elizabeth Juliana Leeves] Sabine on her work translating ‘Dove’s work’ from German to English and its publication as mentioned in the Cosmos newspaper.
Abbadie sends observations of a ‘phenomenon’ from the Bay of Biscay [not enclosed]. |
