TitleLetter from Francis Beaufort, Admiralty to Edward Sabine
Date7 March 1850
DescriptionBeaufort refers to [Horatio Thomas Austin’s] enthusiasm to work for Sabine, and notes the instrument Sabine mentioned will be perfect for him. Beaufort will suggest the ‘locus operandi’ to be at Johnson’s magnetic observatory. Discussion on Kater’s compasses, and Beaufort’s opinion that each compass should have a second needle without a card, and a thin paper card pasted at the bottom. Beaufort is unsure ‘whether Captain O will be detached from Captain A, by orders’, [possibly referring to Captain Horatio Thomas Austin and Captain Erasmus Ommanney], however in such an ’anxious and vigorous search they will sooner or later separate’ [referring to finding Sir John Franklin’s lost expedition]. Captain [William] Penney would like certain instruments.
