TitleLetter from George Bentham, 25 Wilton Place to Edward Sabine
Date21 January 1865
DescriptionBentham regrets not having met Sabine to discuss the matter of the ‘soirees’, and that he is aware that he should not interfere with Sabine’s arrangements. Bentham having not heard anything form Sabine has proceeded to make his own arrangements. Bentham informs Sabine that he should make the ‘experiments this year’. Bentham discusses Sabine’s suggestion of holding one Royal [Society] and one Linnean [Society] soiree, and references the Zoological and Botanical society. The president of the Royal Society is an official representative of science in England and gathers the most ‘eminent’ men and patrons of science, and would not want to ‘deprive the scientific world’ one of these occasions. Bentham discusses he holds two soirees as the President of the Linnean [Society] being more social meetings of a specific type of science.
