| Description | Bentham has been looking over Mr [Clements] Markham’s paper, and discusses [Richard] Spruces application for a ‘civil list pension’. The work Spruce has done shows very grounds for grant of the pension applied for including the observations he has made and the scientific knowledge he has acquired, and the results he has published. In Bentham’s opinion there is no one is natural science better entitled to receive the [money] that Sabine proposes to offer him. Bentham discusses other scientists who are also deserving of this grant including Mr [Alfred Russel] Wallace. Bentham discusses if ‘our colonies’ are also eligible to the recipients of Royal Society medals and that [Ferdinand von] Mueller has great claim to his honour. Bentham informs Sabine that he is a better judge, but that he only offers suggestions that would be better recipients for the Royal Society award or medal than Mr Spruce. |
