TitleLetter from George Bentham, 25 Wilton Place to Edward Sabine
Date24 March 1865
DescriptionDiscussion on the memorial [Miles Joseph] Berkeley brought to him signed by Sir William [Jackson] Hooker in regard to Berkeley’s application for the civil list pension. Bentham informs Sabine that the memorial has been signed by the most influential botanists residing in or near London, two or three of these gentlemen have links to the government and position in the church. The testimony of the Royal Society on Berkeley’s scientific merits takes a prominent part, and the signature of the President of the Society will be something that the government will naturally look at. Bentham hopes that Sabine will look at this matter in a more favourable light and once receiving his authorisation will forward the memorial for his signature.
