TitleLetter from Pieter Adrian Bergsma, Batavia [Jakarta, Indonesia] to Edward Sabine
Date18 October 1871
DescriptionBergsma is sending Sabine two copies of the first volume of observations made at the magnetical and meteorological observatory in Batavia [colonial name of the capital of the Dutch East Indies, now Jakarta, Indonesia], and would like Sabine to present a copy to the Royal Society on his behalf. Bergsma was unable to take observations of the variations of the horizontal and vertical force. Bergsma values Sabine’s opinion of his book. Bergsma makes comparisons with results achieved at the St Helena Observatory. Discussion on the analysis of the disturbances of the declination, observations made with the dip circle and diurnal variation of the inclination. Bergsma discusses the lunar diurnal variation of the declination. Bergsma argues that his results prove that [Jakarta] is a station ‘of great interest’ and hopes this will encourage the Dutch government to grant him an observatory there. Bergsma notes the resistance and difficulty he has met here, but hopes this will end next year when a decision regarding an observatory should be made.
