TitleLetter from Robert Grymbald Bigsby, Repton near Burton-on-Trent to James Clark Ross
Date6 July 1847
DescriptionBigsby thanks Ross for a copy of his narrative of the late Antarctic expedition, which will be ‘the principal ornament’ of Bigsby’s library, and expresses his admiration Ross’s ‘talents and attainments’. Bigsby hopes to cultivate a closer knowledge of each other in the future. Bigsbsy informs Ross of the recent loss of his wife, expresses his feelings, and describes his wife’s illness and suffering which she endured ‘heroically’ for 20 years. Bigsby remembers his wife as a ‘humble and sincere Christian’ whose loss to the family is ‘great and irreparable’.

Bigsby hopes to send Ross a copy of a three volume work of his soon, and asks Ross’s permission to send his work to Lady Ross, as she may be a more sympathetic reader as opposed to Ross’s ‘masculine’ mind.

Bigsby is currently collecting letters from literary acquaintances to support his application to the University of Glasgow for the degree of LLD. Bisgby currently holds a diploma from Rome and wishes to obtain a degree from a protestant university. Bigsby asks Ross if he is able to offer an opinion on Bigsby’s literary works. Bigsby names his supporters in regard to this subject and discusses the individuals he has been in contact with.

Bigsby mentions his late was enthusiastic about the polar expeditions.
