| Description | Blakiston has written to Colonel [William James] Smythe twice but has not heard from him. Blakiston intends to visit Australia and New Zealand before returning to England. Blakiston describes his time is Canton, remarks on the hot weather. Lieutenant Rokeby of the Royal Marines has kept a series of barometric and thermometric observations without assistance and has sent a part of his observations to the Royal Society. Rokeby has expressed his wish to be employed in magnetic and meteorological work to the British Association, and suggested the establishment of an observatory at ‘St Paul and Amsterdam Islands’ [Île Saint-Paul]. Blakiston praises Rokeby as an observer and asks Sabine to bear him in mind should he need officers for such work. |
