TitleCopy of a letter from John Allan Broun, Makerstoun, Kelso to Humphrey Lloyd
Date3 April 1843
DescriptionBroun discusses his reasons for proposing to give corrected observations. Discussion on the vertical component in divisions of the micrometre head in relation to the changes in temperature. Broun expresses his hope to eliminate the effect of temperature from daily observations. Broun comments on presenting corrected observations in addition to uncorrected observations. Broun informs Lloyd of a stove in the middle of the [Makerstoun] Observatory, its distance from the vertical and horizontal force pillars, and its effect of the heat from the stove on the vertical force [magnetometer]. Broun describes the position of the instruments in the observatory and the effect of the temperature. Discussion regarding errors of the thermometer, and the difference in sensibility’. Reference to extra observations made during disturbances. Advantages of printing one element in each page. Cause of the effect of temperature on the vertical force needle.
