TitleLetter from John Allan Broun, Stuttgart to Edward Sabine
Date15 September 1870
DescriptionBrooke draws Sabine’s attention to the variation of the declination magnet at [Thiruvananthapuram] Trevandrum Observatory from year to year, and describes the movement of the needle from east towards north from 1841 to 1855, and then turning to the east again, and the yearly rate of movement increasing until 1864 and then diminishing. Brooke places great importance on this therefore suggests continuing observations for a few additional years, and asks Sabine’s opinion regarding this matter. Provides Sabine with additional information in order for him to judge the question of continuing observations for a few years longer. Discusses the instruments for the declination at [Thiruvananthapuram] ‘Trevandrum’ and the observers.

When Brooke left [Thiruvananthapuram] ‘Trevandrum’ in 1865, with the help of Sir [William] Denison, then Governor of Madras [Chennai], he obtained a limited series of observations for six years, as well as well as meteorological series of observations from stations in South India. Brooke has written to Mr [George Biddell] Airy regarding the continuation of observations. Brooke mentions the delay in publishing his observations from India.
