TitlePrivate letter from William Benjamin Carpenter, University of London, Burlington House to Edward Sabine
Date21 March 1870
DescriptionCarpenter informs Sabine that he has had to postpone matters relating to the ‘porcupine expedition’ [reference to the deep-sea explorations using ‘HMS Porcupine’]. Carpenter describes his heavy workload with University matters, 112 candidate for the office of his assistant, and the preparation of a new building to be opened by Queen [Victoria] on 11th May. Carpenter has written a paper based on a lecture he gave to the Royal Institute, that will serve as a basis for their application for a deep-see expedition. Carpenter describes two objectives of the last expedition which were not carried out. Mr Lowe and Mr Childers express their support for such an endeavour.
