DescriptionReference to the ill health of Sabine’s father-in-law, suffering an attack of inflammation of the lungs at the age of 86. Challis thanks Sabine for updating him regarding the work that has already been with the Melbourne telescope. Challis is pleased to hear that the photographic apparatus for the [Melbourne] telescope will be despatched soon, and comments on the importance of photography to depict the phenomena of celestial objects. Expresses a ‘general approval’ of Professor [George Gabriel] Stokes address at Exeter, and discusses points he finds less agreeable. Reference to Professor [James Joseph] Sylvester’s advocacy of the functions of mathematics, and Professor Huxley. Challis discusses his book on physical theories.
