TitleLetter from Charles Chambers [Mumbai] Bombay to Edward Sabine
Date12 December 1864
DescriptionChambers thanks Sabine for his kind words regarding Chambers need for assistance in securing the directorship of the [Mumbai] Bombay Observatory. Chambers discusses his interview with Mr [William Edward] Frere, brother of the Governor of Bombay [Sir Bartle Frere], and remarks Sabine’s letter worked in his favour. However, Frere warned Chambers not to be too ‘sanguine’ of his success as the recommendations he has made require additional expenditure which would need to be approved by various bodies. Refers to the similarity of the [Mumbai] Bombay Observatory to colonial observatories after setting up additional apparatus. Chambers was instructed to provide a report of his magnetical department to the Secretary Mr Burgess.
