TitleLetter from Charles Chambers, Colaba Observatory [Mumbai] Bombay to Edward Sabine
Date24 August 1866
DescriptionChambers thanks Sabine for his opinion that he should be the successor in the superintendency of Kew Observatory, and though feels he is unworthy of the position would endeavour to maintain the reputation of the institution that Mr [John] Welsh and Mr [Balfour] Stewart have cultivated. Chamber remarks on the lack of opportunities that may be available to him in India, if the Secretary of State and the Government of India do not approve Chambers recommendations. The approval will be dependent on a reference from the Royal Society. Discussion on the objection to the site of the observatory on account of disturbance to the instruments. Discussion regarding Chambers salary, and his prospects working at Kew.
