TitleLetter from Charles Chambers, Colaba Observatory [Mumbai] Bombay to Edward Sabine
Date13 December 1866
DescriptionChamber discusses a letter from the Secretary of state for India, and remarks that this significantly changed the prospect of his purpose at the [Mumbai] Bombay Observatory. Lord Cranborne [Robert Arthur Talbot Gascoyne-Cecil] has come to the conclusion, with the recommendation of the Astronomer Royal that no astronomical observatory needs to be maintained in India longer than Mr [Norman Robert] Pogson’s present investigations. Lord Cranborne instructs Chambers to carry out the recommendation Chambers had outlined in his report, to work in communication with the Astronomer Royal, and report on his investigations to him. Chambers remarks on the Astronomer Royal’s control over the [Colaba Observatory] will render it a copy of the Greenwich Observatory as it was four years ago.
