Title | Letter from Charles Chambers, Colaba Observatory [Mumbai] Bombay to Captain Young |
Date | 30 January 1867 |
Description | Chambers discusses the contents of the Secretary of States letter No. 34. Chambers informs Young that he has communicated with the Astronomer Royal regarding the measures that should be adopted to maintain a close connection between the Government Observatory, ‘Bombay’ [Mumbai] and the Royal Observatory Greenwich.
Discusses remarks from the Secretary of States letter to the Governor General No. 91 dated 31st October, regarding the maintenance of an astronomical observatory, the pursuit of terrestrial magnetism in India, and the function of the observatory at ‘Bombay’ [Mumbai]. The Secretary of State has concluded that it is no longer possible to maintain an astronomical observatory in India, and that one observatory will be used to determine local mean time and investigations into magnetism and meteorology. Chambers would like Young to bring these to the attention of the Governor General of Bombay in Council.
Remarks on the scientific intelligence of Great Britain. Discussion on the objective of regular daily signal of the true time. ‘The Committee of the enquiry on the Colaba Observatory suggests that the maintenance of correct time, dropping the time ball, and rating chronometers should be under the constant and direct Superintendence of a skilled European’, and that this Superintendent with the help of an ‘in-expensive Native’ could keep magnetic and meteorological observations.
Discussion on the arrangement and cooperation between Colaba Observatory and the Royal Observatory at Greenwich, and investigations into terrestrial magnetism.
Chambers agrees with the Secretary of State that [Mumbai] Bombay is well prepared for scientific operations.
Discussion regarding the appointment of a Superintendent of the observatory, with Chambers detailing his achievements in the world of science that make him a suitable candidate to lead the observatory. |
