DescriptionChambers previously wrote to Gassiot regarding the procurement of magnetic and meteorological instruments in England for the use at Colaba Observatory. Chambers informs Gassiot that these have now arrived and been mounted and supported. Instruments received include Barrow’s dip circle, portable absolute declinometer, absolute horizontal intensity apparatus and Beckley’s modification of Dr Robinson’s anemograph.

Discussion regarding the Resolution of Government, Marine Department No. 505 dated 23rd August 1867 (included as an appendix) regarding the decision to take magnetical observations in connection with Kew Observatory. Chambers refers to Colaba Observatory’s previous objective to conduct time signalling and chronometer rating operations. Chambers details how, at the recommendation of the Royal Society, the Colaba Observatory became a part of the British colonial magnetic and meteorological observatories.

Chambers requests the advice of the Kew Observatory in increasing the efficiency of the Colaba Observatory. Reference to instruments that are observed hourly, maintenance of the anemograph, weekly observations, district meteorological observations, transit observations for the determination of time, chronometers, daily meteorological reports, electrical communication, and the state of computation.
