TitleLetter from Charles Chambers, Colaba Observatory [Mumbai] Bombay to [Edward Sabine]
Date8 September 1868
DescriptionChambers received 12 packages [containing instruments] and describes 11 of the packages to be in bad condition as expected on a rough journey an ‘overland’ route is subjected to, but they can be put into place without delay. However, one ‘important’ package containing the recording machinery sustained much more serious damage. Remarks on where the instruments will be kept. Chambers suggests the ‘injured’ machinery should be repaired as best as possible in [Mumbai], to avoid any delays in starting the instruments. Updates Sabine on the progress of the construction of the magnetograph room, and describes delays to this. Reference to two ‘British Eclipse Expeditions’.
