TitleLetter from Francis Baily, 37 Tavistock Place to Edward Sabine
Date21 September 1829
Description[Includes Edward Sabine’s reply to this letter].

Bailey discusses an ‘accident’ which Sabine referred to in his last letter. Bailey assures Sabine the accident did not occur because of his experiment, he had completed his pendulum observations. Bailey had met with a discordance which applied to the subject of pendulums in general, after which Taylor proposed to make a regular series of experiments in order to discover the cause of those anomalies. Bailey let Taylor borrow his pendulum and expresses that the suggestion for the experiment was entirely Taylor’s, though would not like to shift the responsibility to him, only to set the record right. Bailey suggests waiting for the general expense of those pendulums before any changes are made to any person.

Sabine replies to Bailey regarding his pendulum experiments and the apparatus used.
