Refers to the ‘appointment’ of a magnetic survey of the seas. Reference to magnetic instruments and discussion regarding number of assistants and apprentices at different Indian observatories. Requirements of conducting a survey. Elliot refers to portable instruments, fixed instruments in an observatory and the ‘magnetic condition of the magnet’. Refers to the Simla observations.
