DescriptionRefers to magnetism, semi secular and secular observations. Erman refers to his article on his Berlin observations. Erman thinks ‘Lady Sabine has made so much of a German scholar of you’. Discussion regarding experiments on the ‘polarisation of light of one of the comets of 1861’. Refers to German astronomers and the measurement of angles, and the ‘polarisation of celestial lights’. Erman discusses his nephew ‘Paul Herter’ and refers to rocks, the theory of volcanism and geology. Erman references Sabine’s contributions to English sea expeditions of 1830s and 1840s. Discussion regarding Dr [Otto] Kersten’s ‘passage to Africa’ [possibly referring to Kersten taking part in Karl Klaus von der Decken's expedition in East Africa in 1862]. Erman asked Kersten to make barometer observations on board the ship as often as he could, and discusses the results. Refers to the barometric column, the latitude, ‘the difference of pressure’, the temperature, ‘velocity of trade winds’. Discusses Kersten’s instruments.
