TitleLetter from George Adolph Erman to George Biddell Airy
Date25 March 1870
DescriptionRegarding Erman’s subjoined paper and refers to ‘his friend’ Mr H Peterson’s hopes to make his work enduring. Peterson is currently a teacher at the college at Kiel. Peterson recently received a number of Astronomische Nachrichten where Erman’s opinion was mentioned before he could transmit it to him.

Erman asks Airy if it is ‘convenient to request the British Association to renew to Mr Peterson for one or a couple of years, the support they accorded him from 1846 to 1848’ therefore allowing him to make a ‘complementary’ part to his previous work. Erman asks Airy to transcribe this letter Sabine in order to get both their opinions on this matter.

Erman has received Sabine’s ‘beautiful’ magnetic maps for 1842 to 1845 referring to the south polar maps and the numerical elements. Erman is of the opinion a few months will be enough for calculating the potential constant for the same period.
