TitleLetter from James David Forbes, Edinburgh to Professor [Arnold Henry] Guyot
Date28 April 1842
DescriptionRegarding a printed letter by Mr Agassiz including a memorandum containing an account of a structure of the glacier of the Gries observed in 1838. Forbes expresses no hesitation in saying that he observed and pointed out to Mr Agassiz and Mr Heath on the glacier Aar, a similar structure. Forbes does not take credit for the ‘originality and clearness’ for Guyot’s observation, however, Forbes was unaware of Guyot’s observations therefore could not have ‘borrowed’ them from him. According to Forbes, Agassiz insinuates that he should have known of Guyot’s unpublished observation. Forbes argues that Agassiz is claiming Guyot’s observations as his own.
